Bringing Canberra to Perth Schools
Federal Member for Pearce welcomes Speaker to local schools as part of Parliament in Schools program.
On Thursday 13th June 2024, the Federal Member for Pearce, Ms Tracey Roberts MP, welcomed the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Honourable Milton Dick MP, to Irene McCormack Catholic College in Butler and Shorehaven Primary School in Alkimos as part of the Parliament in Schools program.
During the visit, students learned about federation, democracy, and the Australian Parliament, and heard first-hand from the Speaker and Ms Roberts about what a typical day looks like in their electorate and when they are in Canberra for sitting weeks.
"The Parliament in Schools program is a fantastic initiative, allowing students to engage with their local electoral representatives and learn about Federal Parliament's role in our society," Ms Roberts said.
"Congratulations to the Speaker and the program for visiting over 100 schools across Australia, making civics education accessible to students everywhere."
Ms Roberts also encouraged students to actively participate in the program and take advantage of this unique experience.
"To all students in the Parliament in Schools program, I encourage you to make the most of this fantastic learning opportunity. Ask questions, participate actively, and understand your role in shaping Australia's future."
About the Parliament in Schools program
Launched in September 2022, the Parliament in Schools program is a bi-partisan initiative to make civics education accessible to students regardless of their location. In collaboration with local federal members, the Speaker is visiting schools across Australia to bring parliament to them.
The program is an extension to well-established Parliamentary Education Office (PEO) onsite, digital and outreach education programs available to schools across Australia.
It also complements the existing PEO online and print resources that are curriculum-aligned, for Australian teachers and students.
